History

The orchestra, created by Ureli Corelli Hill, gave the Symphonie nº 5 of Beethoven for its inaugural concert the December 7th 1842. Other symphony orchestras had existed with New York before this date, but had not been able to impose itself. The philharmonic one, on the other hand, knew a growing popularity and a manpower in constant increase. At the end of the 19th century, it was found in competition with other orchestras of the country, of which the Symphony orchestra of Boston which regularly came to occur in New York.

In 1893, the Philharmonic one of New York, directed by Anton Seidl, created in the first world Symphonie nº 9 , said " New monde" , of Dvořák, which contributed to the international repute of the orchestra. However, it is in 1909 that the orchestra took really its rise, with its complete professionalisation. Gustav Mahler, celebrates nowadays mainly as type-setter, was its first leader.

The orchestra ordered often new works with contemporary type-setters, and was with the point of the technological innovation. In 1922, it was the first orchestra important to give a concert retransmis to the radio (although this first is also asserted by the Symphony orchestra of Strait). Since 1930, these radio broadcasts are diffused through all America and continue to be it nowadays.

The Philharmonic one of New York gained and preserved an excellent reputation as regards musical pedagogy. The concerts given by young interpreters ( Young People' S Concerts ), initiated the March 27th 1924 by Ernest Schelling, became famous under the direction of Leonard Bernstein. They are diffused at the national level and are available out of CD.

The orchestra was officially in residence with the Carnegie Hall until in 1962, year when he moved in Avery Fisher Hall, in Lincoln Center. In June 2003, the Philharmonic one of New York expressed its intention to turn over to Carnegie Hall in 2006, but Lincoln Center promised an improvement of the quality of its services, which enabled him to preserve the orchestra in its walls.

The orchestra was directed by many musical directors and famous leaders, among which Gustav Mahler, Arturo Toscanini, Bruno Walter, Leopold Stokowski, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Leonard Bernstein (the only chief of the history of the orchestra born in the United States), and Pierre Boulez. From 1978 to 1991, Zubin Mehta was the main leader of orchestra. Kurt Masur succeeded to him, and since 2002, Lorin Maazel occupies this station.
