Irix is an operating system Unix based on UNIX System V and having extensions BSD, company SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc.). Irix is conceived to function nativement on machines 32 and 64 bits of the type MIPS (processor RISC), as well on the work stations as on the waiters.

Irix is known for its stability and its long life of operation and the Filesystem XFS is recognized like being one of most advanced in industry.

Moreover, Irix has a very effective support for all that touches with the imagery (3D, effect special,…) and transfers of mass. (The file servers under Irix are among most effective and most powerful) Lastly, Irix was one of the first systems to integrate an interactive graphical interface (famous X-window) and is provided 4Dwm (Window Manager) as well as libraries Reason. In August 2005, the current version is the 6.5.28. Currently, the exits are quarterly and include two versions: the first (Maintenance release) includes corrections compared to basic version 6.5 and the second (Feature release) includes new functionalities. Let us notice that the versions until the 6.5.22 included are free in remote loading at SGI and that the current versions require a very expensive contract at SGI

The top-of-the-range stations of SGI functioning under Irix are known for their design of avant-garde and for their colors. Among those, one can quote ONYX I and II, octane I and II, or Fuel. In the same way, on the level waiters one finds the " Super Calculateurs" of type Origin 2000 and 3000 declined in many versions.

Irix is in particular used in the production and the post-production of cartoon films in synthesized images, with software of special effects, such as Flame, of Discreet Inc. It is on the way to be détrôné on this market by GNU/Linux, that SGI provides already on the new stations of the PRISM type.
