Phil Napoleon
Phil Napoleon (Filippo Napoli) is a Trompettiste of American Jazz born in September 2nd 1901 with Boston (Massachusetts) and deceased the September 13rd 1990 with Miami (Florida).
Biography
Trumpet player having followed a “traditional” formation, Phil Napoleon begins his professional path in dance bands. At the end of years 10, it founds, with the pianist Franck Signorelli, the “Original Memphis Five”. This group records its first disc in 1921. This formation, more or less often refitted, records under other names: the “Bailey' S Lucky Seven”, the “Southland Six”, the “Ladd' S Black Aces”, the “Jazzbo' S Carolina Serenaders”, the “Chasers Charleston” and even the “Napoleon' S Emperors”. One can hear on these faces of the musicians like Red Nichols, Jack Teagarden, Miff Mole, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Lennie Hayton, Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti, Gene Krupa, Dave Tough,…
In the Thirties, Phil Napoleon works as musician of studio. in 1937, it forms a Big band swing which is only one mitigated success. Phil Napoleon thus finds quickly the door of the studios. From 1943 to 1947, he is member of the orchestra of Jimmy Dorsey. From 1947, he works primarily as musician of studio, in particular for the “NBC”, while ressuscitant sometimes his “Original Memphis Five”.
In 1956, it settles in Miami. It opens there a club, “Napoleon' S Retreat”, where it occurs with the head of small formations. Active musician until the 89 years age, Phil Napoleon dies in 1990.
