Phase (electricity)

The word phase indicates at the same time a temporal shift between tensions or signals and, in particular in electrotechnical, one of the conducting of the alternative food. A wire of phase transports a Alternative course.

If one produced single-phase current (i.e. only one phase and a neutral ), the choice of one of the two drivers to make a phase of it would be arbitrary. But in general several phases are produced at the same time and then have between them properties particulières  ; they are identical except for a temporal shift. Exemple : in Three-phase 50  Hz, each of the three phases is shifted compared to the preceding one from (1/50) /3 second (either approximately 6,7 milliseconds).

  • in the case of running industrial, the catches have several drivers, three phases in three-phase current for example (it is the most used) and sometimes a fourth driver (the neutral ).

  • in the case of the current domesticates single-phase current, the food has only two drivers. In general only one phase and the neutre  ; in this case the phase is generally resulting from the one of the three produced phases.
One finds most of the time a driver additional of ground exclusively related to the detection of a defect.

A wire of phase can have a little any color as long as it does not bring any confusion with neutral and terre : thus blue and the green yellow/are prohibited. Generally the phase in rouge  is found;         in marron          or in noir          . In three-phase current, one finds these three colors to distinguish the three phases.

In certain cases (old installations of the Scandinavian countries , left the Transformer S of the the United Kingdom, and some other cases) the two cables of a domestic catch can be phases. Either come from the three-phase network, or at exit of transformer single-phase current (if it is not connected to a neutral potential). That is to be disadvised.

The tension differs from country to country and is fixed by national and industrial standards.
