Phantom city

A phantom city is a Ville which was given up, generally because the Economic activity which made it live was dried up or thereafter Catastrophe S.

There are other factors which can explain the death of a city, for example the disappearance of the natural resources such as the Drinking water, or the brutal withdrawal of the transportation routes (closing of railway lines in rural environment, sudden insulation at the time of a new road alignment…). The excessive intervention of the man can also be against-productive, and one can note some cases of industrial or military catastrophes having led to the desertion from cities, for example in the areas of Nuclear test or around the chemical zones of accidents. Pripiat, city Ukrainian of approximately 50.000 inhabitants, abandoned following the explosion of the Nuclear plant of Tchernobyl, the April 26th 1986, is an archetypal phantom city, all the inhabitants having been evacuated.

Mining productions ceasing these " villes" become phantom as with the Spitzberg in Norway.

The war is also a big factor explaining the sudden development of phantom cities, either by their destruction, or by the mortality high of the active population of active in the past city.

The United States has many phantom cities: immortalized in the Western S, they are varied much. In addition to the mushroom towns, many cities of the Large Plains, rural region which lost the third of its population since 1920, were abandoned; the historian Daniel Fitzgerald of Kansas counts approximately six thousand of them. The areas most concerned are Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Montana or California.
