History

The town of Phalsbourg was created by the Count Palatine Georges-Jean de Veldenz, prince Protestant, thanks to the dowry of his Anna-Maria wife, girl of the king de Suède Gustave Ier Vasa. The foundation was justified by the reception of reformed, then undesirable in the duchy of Lorraine. The Count Palatine had the castle of Einhartzhausen in his county of the Small-Pierre, wedged in Lorraine. He made trace in the vicinity the plan of a new Ville, in checkerwork, symbol then of order and modernity; he granted franknesses to the new inhabitants who would come to populate the city, whose creation was recognized on September 27th, 1570 by the emperor Maximilien II. The city took the name of its founder, Pfalzburg , " Fortress of Palatinat".

However, for lack of money, the city was yielded to the duke of Lorraine in 1590; the attempts at expulsion of reformed multiplied, but encountered a savage resistance. The Count Palatine Georges Gustave, heir to Georges Jean, then founded Lixheim in 1608, which was to know the same fate.

With Lixheim, Phalsbourg formed transitory a Principauté of Phalsbourg and Lixheim (1629-1660) with the profit of the princess Henriette of Lorraine and its successive husbands.

The fortifications of the city were altered and supplemented by Vauban.

The city gave rise to the Maréchal Sheep, duke of Lobau; it was the place of the meeting between the two regionalistic authors Emile Erckmann and Alexandre Chatrian.

In 1953, USAF undertakes construction of what will be the Air base of Phalsbourg-Bourscheid. The base will be used by the Americans until in 1967, date of the withdrawal of France of the integrated command of NATO. Re-elected Camp Horie, the base accommodates the 1 {{er}} regiment of combat helicopters.
