Geography

History

The history of Peyrat-the-Castle undoubtedly began at the time Gallo-Roman, as still certain access roads testify some.

With the the Middle Ages, Peyrat-le-Fort, dominated by the baronnie poitevine of the Lusignan, knows one period of instability (1150 - 1450); Richard Heart-of-Lion, Jean-without-Ground, the Guerre One hundred Year old… destroyed most of the local inheritance.

Buildings will be rebuilt: the square tower (15th century) and the church dedicated to saint Martin (14th century).

Under the Revolution, Peyrat-le-Fort becomes Peyrat-the-Mountain, then chief town of canton.

More recently, let us stress the importance of the tram in local development; the area was also favourable with the actions of the men of the maquis during the Second world war. After war, the hydroelectric project of installation of Vassivière started again the local economy (trade, craft industry, tourism…).
