Peveril of the Peak
Peveril of the Peak (1822) is longest of the novels of Sir Walter Scott. With Ivanhoé , it is one of the novels which Scott locates in England, with an action which takes seat during the civil war.
Julian Peveril, a Riding , is in love with Alice Bridgenorth, girl of a Head-Round, and the action is related to the “Complot papist” of 1678.
The 108 characters constitute a gallery of memorable historical figures, but the popularity of the novel dropped considerably, not only because of the mode which surrounds works of Scott, but in comparison with its other novels.
The character of Fenella, a deaf and dumb maidservant of the countess of Derby, is inspired by Nice, character of the Années of training of Wilhelm Meister , the novel of Goethe.
