Peugeot 908
The Peugeot 908 is a racing racing car of the " type; Mans Prototype" that the French mark Peugeot aligns in competition, and in particular with the 24 hours of Mans, as from the season 2007.
History
It is at the time of the 24 hours of Mans 2005 that Peugeot announces its intention to return at the 24 hours of Mans, test which the firm with the lion gained in 1992 and 1993 with the Peugeot 905. The leaders of Peugeot also reveal that it is with a diesel engine that they intend to carry out their return in the Sarthe. In addition to the commercial interest to align an engine which equips a vast majority with the vehicles commercial in competition, it is also advisable to note that the technical payment of the Automobile Club of the West returns particularly interesting then such a motorization as the will posted of Audi proves it to follow the same way.One year later, in the days which precede the 24 hours by Mans 2006, Peugeot reveals with the press the name of the future car as well as the engine which will be used. According to the tradition of the names with three digits with one zero in the medium, Peugeot choose the name 908, which locates the future car in the line of the Peugeot 905. Peugeot 908 will not have however not to be confused with the Porsche 908, a model of competition of the years 1960.
September 28th, 2006, Peugeot presents at the time of World car a spectacular supposed model to precede what will be future the 908. It is only on January 10th, 2007 (a few days after having carried out its first turns of wheel) which the " vraie" 908 is officially presented to the press. One discovers on this occasion a car with the lines sensiblements distant from that of the model from World of the car. It is equipped with a gear box with six reports/ratios. Peugeot also benefits from it to reveal the name of the 6 pilots who will be at the wheel of the two 908 in Mans: it will be about Stephan Sarrazin, Nicolas Minassian, Sebastien Bourdais, Pedro Lamy, Marc Gené, and of the former world champion of F1 Jacques Villeneuve.
In addition to the 24 hours of Mans, Peugeot 908 will be committed in 2007 in the championship Mans Series. It makes its beginnings in competition on April 15th, 2007 at the time of the 1000 km of Monza, race which it gains with at its wheel Marc Gené and Nicolas Minassian, second 908 finishes third. At the beginning of May, Stephan Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy gain the 1000 km of Valence.
At the time of the 24 hours of Mans 2007, Peugeot 908 had for principal competitors the three Audi R10. The 908 n°7 (Constrained-Minassian-Villeneuve) gave up due to loss of pressure of oil due to a breakage of the oil pump with 1:30 of the end whereas it occupied, before its last stop with the stand, the second place. The 908 n°8 (Bourdais-Lamy-Sarrazin) finished second with 10 towers of alone Audi R10 survivor and with 11 turns in advance on Perscarolo Judd n°16 of the team Pescarolo Sport.
Technique
The engine is a Diesel V12 with 100° biturbo HDi of a cubic capacity of 5,5 liters equipped with two filters particles developing approximately 700 horses and 1200 Nm.
