Petrozavodsk

Petrozavodsk ( Russian Петрозаводск in , Petroskoi or Äänislinna in Carélien or Finnish) is a town of Russia, Capitale of the République of Karelia, with a population of: 282000 inhabitants (2005). It is located on western bank of the Lac Onega.

History

Petrozavodsk was founded in 1703 under the name of Petrovskaïa Sloboda. Pierre Large the made there build a foundry intended for the manufacture of guns and anchors. This factory, named Petrovsky zavod or Machines of Pierre, gave then his name to the city.

Its name in Finnish is generally Petroskoi, but during the Finnish occupation of the Karelia of the east - during the Guerre of continuation of 1941 with 1944 between the the USSR and the Finland, the city was famous Äänislinna , a name drawn from the Finnish name of the Lake Onego, Ääninen.
