Petroglyph

A petroglyph is a drawing symbolic system engraved on stone (rock surface in a natural state). The term comes from the Latin words petros for Greek stones and glyphein for engraving. A “petroglyph” is thus not a Pictogramme - which chronologically tells a history - nor of the parietal Art - which is a painting with very the rock of the walls of caves - .

History

The petroglyphs are generally associated to the prehistoric people Neolithic S and were the dominant form of the symbols pre writing used for the Communication of 10.000 front J. - C. until 5.000 front J. - C. They were gradually replaced by more advanced written forms using Pictogramme S and Idéogramme S. the oldest petroglyphs date from the transition period between the beginning of the Neolithic era and the end of the Paléolithique superior. Certain primitive companies used the petroglyphs longer, sometimes even until their contact with the Western civilization at the 20th century. Petroglyphs were found on all the continents except the the Antarctic with the greatest concentrations in Africa, Scandinavia, Siberia, North America and Australia.

Significance

These images have a deep cultural and religious significance for the companies which created them; in many cases, this significance was preserved by their descendants. It is thought that many petroglyphs represent a form of language symbolic or ritual which is not yet well included/understood. These drawings can have several cultural and religious significances major for these companies.

The oldest cuttings of the Scandinavian Bronze Age in Scandinavia seem to indicate the shape of territorial border between the tribe S, if it is not its religious significance. It seems to exist a " dialecte" commun run enters the petroglyphs neighbors and contemporaries. The Siberian Inscriptions resemble almost an old form of runes, although there is no relation. They are not included/understood yet.

The glyphes of Virginia-Western are famous because of the controversy which burst on their subject in the Eighties. Barry Fell, a pensioned professor of marine biology of the Université Harvard, published an article explaining how it had deciphered the petroglyphs of several zones of Western Virginia. According to him, they were written in Ogam, a irlando-Celtic writing used of the 6th century at the 8th century and they described in detail the nativity of Christ. Fell is known to support a theory on explorations Irish, Iberian, Libyan and Egyptian women of North America 2000 ago or 2500 years.

In fact, the method of Fell rests on an arbitrary grouping of marks. Estimating moreover than they were only the consonants, he could add with his own way of the vowels and the radicals what enabled him to decide which consonant each glyphe represents. The work of Fell was currycomb by linguists and archeologists of various countries. Fell showed them in return to be too much " paresseux" (too damn lazy) to read its writings and to be " ignorants".

Some researchers noticed the resemblance between the styles of petroglyphs on various continents. Although one expects that the people are inspired by their environment, this common style is difficult to explain. It could be a question of a coincidence, very broad migrations or of a common origin.
