Peter Woulfe

Peter Woulfe (1727? - 1803) is a Chimiste and Minéralogiste Irish.

In 1771 it brings back the formation of a yellow dye by treatment of Indigo with nitric Acid , the formed product, the Picric acid , is first the coloring synthetic one. It will be used starting from 1849 for to tint Soie. In 1885 Jean-Baptiste Dumas realizes that the picric acid can be used for the manufacture of Explosif.

It is the first, in 1779, to have suspected the existence of a chemical element then unknown in the Wolframite, the Tungstène. It develops a new process of purification of the Phosphore. One also knows it for the invention of the bottle of Woulfe , a bottle with three necks allowing to make circulate a Gaz in a Liquide.

Woulfe is member of the Royal Society and holder of the Médaille Copley.
