Peter Atkins
Peter William Atkins (born in 1940) is a British chemist, professor of Chimie to the Université of Oxford. It is a prolific writer of books of chemistry, in particular in the fields of physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and molecular mechanics, fields in which its works refer in the whole world, of which most famous ( Physical Chemistry ) is with its eighth edition. He is also the author of books of scientific popularization among which one can quote the perfume of the strawberry and the finger of Galileo .
Atkins (which is asserted as atheistic) also wrote on subjects like the Humanisme, the Athéisme, and on what seems to him an incompatibility between Science and Religion.
Atkins studied chemistry with the Université of Leicester, obtained its license of chemistry in 1964, and supported a thesis on the electronic paramagnetic Résonance and other aspects of theoretical chemistry. It obtained in 1969 the Medola medal of the Royal Company of British Chemistry. He then taught at the University of California (Los Angeles), then in Lincoln College (Oxford) where he always teaches quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry.
He married a scientific colleague (Susan Greenfield) in 1991. They divorced in 2004.
