Petar Guberina
Petar Guberina (May 22nd 1913 with Šibenik - January 22nd 2005 with Zagreb) was a Croatian linguist .
After having finished its secondary schooling with the traditional college of Šibenik, it follows the courses of the Faculty of Arts of the university of Zagreb where it obtains in 1935 its diploma of end of studies in Romance philology (French and Latin). It continues then its studies in France with the Sorbonne, where in 1939 it supports its thesis of doctorate, prepared under the direction of Professors Pierre Fouché and Jules Marouzeau: logical Value and stylistic value of the complex proposals .
This work opens the way with a true “linguistics of the word”, underlining upon the departure, the importance of the rate/rhythm, the intonation, the gesture like optimal factors of the structuring of the languages and thus of their acquisition. Named after the war Professor with the Faculty of Arts of the university of Zagreb, it exerts there until its retirement in 1983 as French Professor and Chef of the department of Romance languages (1951-1965). In 1954, it founds the Institute of phonetics and the Service of phonetics in 1965 of which he became director with his retirement in 1983.
Its research on the Linguistique of the word revolutionizes the training of the living languages and leads to the audio-visual Méthode structuro total (SGAV) elaborate with Paul Rivenc of CREDIF (method Zagreb - Saint-Cloud).
The verbo-tonal Méthode developed on all the continents, as well in the field of the training/alive language teaching as of the rehabilitation and the education of the deaf people, of the children having a faded word like in the therapy of the disorders of the word. The basic principles of the verbo-tonal system were fundamental in the development of the modern methods of foreign language instruction. They are at the base of the electroacoustic materials of diagnosis audiologic and hearing aids.
He was member of the Croatian Académie of sciences and arts since 1963, director, then to advise scientific, of the center-policlinic SUVAG, world center for the development and the formation with the verbo-tonal system.
President of the the Alliance Fran1caise of Zagreb during several years, he was Officier of the Légion of honor.
