Pessinonte

Pessinonte , in Greek Pessinos , was, in the Antiquité, a town of Galatie, at Gallates Tectosages. It was located on the Sangarios, to the west of Gordion, and corresponds to current the Balhisar (province of Eskişehir), in Turkey.

Pessinonte was famous for:

  • its temple of Cybèle, which sheltered a Bétyle of the goddess, whom one said fallen from the sky,
  • the tomb of Attis.

It was controlled théocratiquement.
