Pessimism

The pessimism is the Doctrine opposed to the Optimisme. It is a frame of mind according to which the sum of the evils of this world exceeds that of the goods. In particular, according to these doctrines, the human life is perpetual a Douleur (Schopenhauer), because our destination is to act and that to act consists in obtaining what we do not have. Pessimism denies the Progrès Civilization and Human nature .

It is necessary to combine the pessimism of the Intelligence to the Optimisme of the Volonté ” - quotation of Antonio Gramsci (1891 - 1937), which would have taken as a starting point that of Romain Roland: “ Pessimism of the intelligence, but optimism of the will . ”

Some pessimistic philosophers/thinkers

In addition, one often taxed, wrongly, Friedrich Nietzsche of pessimism, although it denied itself this name, considering that its design of the Surhomme and the Will for power accounted for two of the bases of optimistic doctrines - strictly speaking: nothing to see with the Optimism of a Leibniz! Friedrich Nietzsche draws up a pessimistic report in general of the actual position of Humanity; but, by exceeding this starting pessimism by solutions " optimistes" , one can hardly compare it with Arthur Schopenhauer, for example. To some extent, Nietzsche is a going beyond of the doctrines of Schopenhauer.
