History

The Romains hardly left in the city but the very vague memory of a certain “Peccus” or “Pessus”, which would have given its name to Pessac , that certain specialists however affirm of origin Celte, seeing in “Pect” or “acc” the Suffixe Gaulois - accum. In addition, a villa Gallo-Roman E would have been located at Pessac.

Certain experts Linguistique S see in “Pess” a deformation of “Pisc”, making think of Poisson.

It remains, however, of the Roman some names of sites pessacais, in particular that of “Canteranne” (frog sings), “Tuilerane” (tile).

The Romains had already arranged the Gallic tracks their needs of conqueror-occupants, such as Levade of the landaise part between Pessac and Tests It (not existing Arcachon yet), the way known as “Roman”, now cut by the road of Arcachon and the university field.

Pessac was dominated at the 14th century by the presence of Clément V (Bertrand de Goth), the “Pope Clement” whose still the great pieces of a vintage not less famous remain and who were stronghold of the Archbishop's palace, between other grounds of Church: Haut-Lévêque, Carmelite friars…

The name of Pessac appeared in the texts only at the 12th century.

Montesquieu, interested by the vineyard, made build in Pessac a masonry (currently Bacalan).
It is only in second half of the 19th century that the current center of Pessac was built in the middle of the vines with the place of the Ve République and the town hall, after the displacement of the cemetery being next to the church.

The districts built at the 20th century are it often with the detriment of the initial wine aspect of the city. For example, the districts known as of “Saige Formanoir” and the “Haut-Lévêque” were built on the grounds of old wine castles pessacais.

In addition the increasing and being modernized Agglomeration of Bordeaux, of the building sites having for goal the dwelling or the urban development (tram, roads…) continue to make move back the green areas of the city.

It is in Pessac that Pierre Hugues carried out the first tests of a revolutionary system for the Gemmage of the pine S, that it Brevet will era in the middle of the 19th century: the pot ascentionnel (resin pot).
