Personality disorder

A personality disorder , or pathological personality indicates in psychiatry an anomaly in the manner of being in the world of a subject (in its thoughts, its feelings, its relations with the others) such as it involves significant disturbances of its social operation or a state of suffering.

The personality can be defined by " the result at a given subject of the dynamic integration of cognitive, instinctual and emotional components, the fitting of these various factors constitute the features of personality, namely the relational methods in the person, her way of perceiving the world and of thinking themselves in its environnement".

The personality presents two properties:

  • It is stable in time, which guarantees continuity to be of the person,
  • It is single, characteristic of the subject, distinguishing it from the others.

When does one speak about Personality disorder ?

One speaks about personality disorder when certain features of the personality rigidify oneself involving either a suffering, or of the dysfunctions. It is about a chronic affection, generally appearing during the Adolescence. The personality disorders are often associated with others psychiatric affections, of which they worsen the forecast.
