Persian forwarding of 1796

The Persian Forwarding of 1796 or the Expédition of Catherine II Large the is with the Persian Expédition of Pierre Large the, one of the wars Russo-Iranian women of the 18th century which did not cause durable consequences for one or the other of the belligerents.

The last decades of the 18th century are marked by the different continual ones to take the throne of the Peacock. Catherine II Large the, Empress of Russia, car profit of this disorder to consolidate its capacity on the weakened local authorities of the the Caucasus. The kingdom of Georgia becomes vassal Russian Empire in 1783, when Erekle II ratifies the Traité of Georgievsk, by which the empress promises to defend the kingdom in the event of Iranian attack. The Shamkhal of Tarki, a lord " Khan " city located in the Daguestan, follows the example and accepts Russian protection later three years.

With the establishment of Aga Mohammad Shah as a Persian Shah of in 1794, the political climate changes. It puts a term at the period of dynastic conflicts and carries out the intensifying of the control of the Caucasus by devastating Georgia by the battle of Krtsanisi, close to Tbilissi, and by reducing this capital to a heap of ash in 1795. In accordance with the treaty of Georgievsk, Catherine II is determined to assemble a punitive forwarding against the Shah.

Although it is largely awaited so that at least 13.000 Russian soldiers are carried out by a raftered general, Ivan Gudovich, the empress takes the advice of her lover, the prince Plato Zoubov, and entrusts the command to his/her young brother, the count Valérien Zoubov. The Russian troops start from Kizlyar in Daguestan in April 1796 and give the attack to the principal fortress of Derbent on May 10th. The event is glorifié by the Poète of the royal Cour Derzhavin in its famous ode. It later bitterly presents its observations on the not very glorious return of Zoubov in another remarkable poem.

Mid-June, the troops of Zoubov invade without knowing resistance the essence of the Azerbaïdjan, including the three main cities: Bakou, Shamakhi and Gandja. In November, they station with the confluence of the Araks and the river Koura, on standby of the attack of the Iranian territory .

It is this same month that the empress of Russia dies. Its successor Paul I {{er}}, which hates Zoubov, has other plans for the army; in particular the " Indiyskiy Pokhod Pavla ", the sending of a Franco-Russian forwarding directed by a Cavalry Cossack to fight the British S in India. It thus orders the withdrawal of the troops in Russia. This reversal causes the frustration and the hostility of powerful Zoubov and other officers who take share in the countryside: good number of them will be among the conspirators who will organize the murder of Paul later five years.
