Perry Rhodan

Perry Rhodan is a series of German science fiction which appears in the form of weekly booklets since 1961. In German language, it contains approximately: 2500 booklets. They were translated, in variable quantity, in several languages, of which English and French. The series is divided into cycles being able to go from thirty to hundred episodes, making it possible to easily take it in the course of road.

The French edition exists since 1966, initially within the Anticipation collection of the black Fleuve, then in a specific collection. Only 230 pounds of the series left to France.

Summary

This series tells the epopee of an astronaut of the U.S. Air Force which leaves in recognition on the Moon. It finds then there a vessel extraterrestrial. The beings of this vessel are Arkonides which need an medical assistance. Rhodan takes along Krest, Arkonide sick, on Earth. N the other hand, Arkonides give to Rhodan, like with his/her friend Reginald Bull, knowledge and the technology acquired by these people.

Rhodan, with its return to earth, refuses to favor one of the blocks in presence (China, the USSR and E. - U. - at the time of the first publications of Rodhan in 1961, one is into full Cold war) while giving to him the new technologies revealed by Arkonides.

It creates in the Gobi Desert an independent territory: the “third Force”, which puts an end to the cold war at the time of an attempt at invasion of the Earth by the extraterrestrial ones and unifies the people of the Earth. It also creates the Milice of the Mutants in 1971. Pushed by Arkonides, eager to regain their fatherland, he traverses the galaxy and discovers new planets, including one inhabited by the Immortal one, where he becomes “immortal relative”. Thus, it directs the people of the Earth (the Land ones) towards a galactic future and forms the “Solar Empire”.

To each cycle, a new threat arises, confronting Perry Rhodan with mysteries increasingly darker and dangerous to solve.

Characters

Perry Rhodan

Rhodan is the protagonist: large, thin, a face with engraved features and eyes gray. It was born into 1936 with the the United States. It is slightly telepathic and remembers people whom it meets, moreover he is galactopsychologist.

Rhodan is at the beginning of the history a major of the United States Air Force which directs a space shuttle, then after many years of work, it becomes Stellarque solar empire. He marries Arkonide Thora of Zoltral, then after the death of this one he will marry Mory Abro.

Rhodan receives, on behalf of Immortal of Délos, its activator cellular into 2103.

Reginald Bull

Reginald Bull, alias Bully, is a friend of Rhodan of the first hour. It was born on May 14th, 1938 in the United States. Of appearance heavy and squat, it has a promptness of first order. Its face is broad with tasks of redness. Its yeus blue is faded and it abore a hair out of brush of russet-red color. It is impulsive and often uses of a vocabulary rather rich in insults and swearwords.

Although having many arguments with Rhodan, there is between the two characters a real complicity. He is initially solar marshal then Vice-Stellarque, and he receives a few years after Rhodan a cellular activator.

The chronology of the series

  • : 200000 before J. - C.: Cappins make the breeding of the men on the ground, which they know under the name “Lotron”.

  • : 60000 before J. - C.: In the galaxy M87, people invent Bestians and makes of it the breeding, these creatures end up revolting against their creators. Bestians are banished and certain leave for the Milky Way. A portion of these Bestians will become of Halutiens.

  • : 50000 before J. - C.: The Lemurs, the first humanity, are overcome by Halutiens. Those drive out them towards the Galaxie of Andromède. Civilization lémurienne on Lemur (Earth) is destroyed. The 4th planet, Zeut, are destroyed and form the asteroid belt.

  • : 8000 before J. - C.: Atlan and a group of Arkonide S discovers the Earth, which they name “Larsaf III”. They found a colony there. Because of the wars against Maahks and Droufs, they forget this colony and Atlan is blocked on Larsaf III.

  • 1971 : The second humanity is car-destroying itself during the cold war. Perry Rhodan, who discovers the vessel Arkonide on the Moon, prevents some. Creation of the Militia of the Mutants and the Third Force.

  • 1984 : Plain humanity dares the flight until Arkonis and meets the Regent, a machine, which controls the Arkonide Empire.

  • 2040 : Droufs invade the Universe once again. The Regent and Perry Rhodan sign a fragile alliance against Droufs.

  • 2044 : Rhodan and Atlan succeed in reversing the Regent, then Atlan becomes Empereur under the car of Gnozal VIII.

  • 2102 : Discovered Blue System. The Akone S threaten the Arkonide Empire as well as the Earth, and foment until in 2106 several plots to recover the control of the galaxy.

  • 2112 : Bioposis, of the beings semi-organics and semi-robotics, threaten the galaxy. After Rhodan found and removed the causes of their hatred, Bioposis (or Posbis) becomes the best friends of the Terrien S.

  • 2326 : The Empire of Blue is discovered in the galactic East. At the conclusion of hard battles, an alliance between the Land S, Arkonide S, Bioposis and Arras eliminates the threat from Blue into 2327.

  • 2400 : The access to the Galaxie of Andromède is discovered. The holders of the capacity, the Insular Masters, try to subject the Milky Way. Maahks, the soldiers of the Masters, are combined with the Terrien S, then revolt against the Masters. The Masters are 7, Faktor 1 in Faktor 7. They use technologies higher than the Terrien S, of which the voyage in the past. In 2405, the war finishes by a total defeat of the despotic Masters.

  • 2435 : Bestians, the ancestors of Halutiens, show the Terrien S of a crime against time. For this reason, they enter in war against the Solar Empire. Following an accident, the vessel Krest IV of Perry Rhodan plunges in the Hyperespace and is found in the galaxy M87, the old fatherland of Bestians. With the assistance of Halutiens peaceful, the Terrien S gain the war against Bestians.

  • 2909 : During the Second Genesis, the Milice of the Mutants is almost destroyed.

  • 3430 : The people of Land are the most important of number in the galaxy. But it is divided into various communities - of which Solar Empire. Various threats cause disorders, of which an invasion of Cappins. In 3437, Rhodan is constrained to organize a forwarding in the native galaxy of Cappins, Gruelfin, with the ganjo Ovaron.

  • 3440 : Perry Rhodan succeeded in releasing Gruelfin and regains the Milky Way. But in this one the Swarm appeared, and all the people lost their intelligence following a handling of the Gravitation.

Technology

Weapons

  • Canon converter
Weapon given by the Immortal one to Atlan. It creates an unstable field of energy on the selected target. The target disappears then in a field from quintidimmensionnelle energy.
the secrecy of this weapon disappears when the Land ones seek the plans of them.
  • Canon sequential
Weapon of people named Perlian. This weapon disintegrates very target of billion particles, the process is on the basis of energy shock quintidimensionnels.
  • Canon transformer
This weapon, only used by the Land ones and Bioposis, transports bombs by the hyperspace. It functions in a way identical to the fictitious transmitter of the Immortal one. The specifications of construction are secret Top.
  • Radiant
    • Narco-radiant
    • : Invented by Sauriens de Mécanica. This weapon deadens its victims during on average 3 hours. It is called also narco-gun or gun with narcosis. Note:: The Arkonide S invented a slightly similar weapon.
    • pacificatory radiant
    • : invented by the lemurs: 49000 front J-C to fight against Bestians. Later, thanks to this weapon, Bestians became Halutiens. This weapon creates a psychic change which aims at pacifying Bestians.

Vessels

  • spherical Launch
Vessel 60 meters in diameter. Speed and autonomy vary according to the technology acquired by the people Terrien. It has a basic armament: disintegrators, shield (standard Arkonide, then HS).
  • Corvette
Another name of the launch.
  • Destroyer
Vessel of 30 meter length equipped with multiple radiant guns with long range as well as protective shield. The crew is composed of 3 men.
  • Escort ships
special Launch invented into 2404, it has a light armament, a kalup and a screen. The crew is of 20 men.
  • Frigate
Vessel 100 meters in diameter with an engine in general faster than an escort ship. Exact designation is vessel of State class.
  • Slide block
3 meters length Apparatus, equipped with anti-g fields, having a hermetic cockpit and with only 2 places. They are used in general as vehicle of recognition in unknown worlds and particular vehicle.
There exists a model with 4 places which is useful, generally, of taxi in the inhabited worlds.
  • Mosquito
Small 26 meters length hunter equipped with a fixed transformer gun. It is in general two-seater. And equipped with a screen HS.
  • Ultracroiseur (or Cruiser galaxy classifies)
the hull measures two kilometers and half of diameter. The system of armament has its system of energy supply. Maximum acceleration is of 600  km/s. This type of vessel has four protective shields, of which a HS. A battery of sixty transformer guns of thousand gigatonnes each one constitutes most of the armament.   • : Very dense and solid metal created by the Arkonide S. This metal is used for the vessels, the Bunker and the robots.
    • Terkonite
  • : Made starting from Arkonite, this metal is 3 times more resistant. The use is identical to that of Arkonite. The formula of this metal will evolve/move throughout technological advances.
  • Detecting of structure
Apparatus invented by the Franc-Frontier runners with the assistance of Swoons. It reacts to the shock of space quadridimentionnel produces by an outgoing vessel of the hyperspace.
  • cellular Shower
Name given to the process of renovation invented by the Immortal one. This process consists in renovating any person remaining in the cabin. On average 24  is needed; H to make a complete shower, the effect of this shower is 60 years during which the subjects do not age.
  • Screen HS
Shield with high overload which is very resistant. It is used by Bi-Conditioned then by the Terrien S. In spite of the advent of other types of shield, it is the shield of reference.
  • Kalup
System of propulsion flown in Droufs, thanks to the mutant Ernst Ellert, which was used for the first time into 2102 on the ship the Magician . This system aims at creating a protective field around the hull of the ship which absorbs the energy impacts, making it possible to plunge in the entre' space (zone between space and the hyperspace). This invention avoids the shock of the rematerialisation which upsets the crew during long minutes. The original name is linear propulsion. But the fact that professor Arno Kalup developed the first viable prototype resulted in to keep the denominator of “Kalup”.
  • Transmitting fiction
Invention of Immortal allowing to send an object in any place without any receiver. It measures 5 meters in diameter. The Immortal one made gift with Perry Rhodan of it. The Akonide S and the Land ones developed transmitters which require a transmitter-transmitter and a receiver.

Authors

The creation of such a vast and complex fictional universe requires a team work. The central screen of the series is developed by a “writer of talk”. Each number is then written by a member of the team starting from a detailed diagram. With the passing of years, more than two dozen authors took part in this task. In the episodes published in France, the project superintendent is K.H. Scheer.
