  • Angelo Mariani (born on December 17th, 1838 in Pero-Casevecchie in Corsica - deceased on April 1st, 1914) was a French chemist.

Inventor of a tonic drink Then preparer of pharmacy, it developed in 1863 a tonic drink, carried out starting from wine of Bordeaux and extract of sheets of Coke, marketed at the time under the name of wine Mariani. These were an enormous success which was worth to him the celebrity in all Europe. The Pope Leon XIII as a sign of his official approval decreed a special medal to him.

He could entrust publicity to the largest celebrities, in particular literary: “I have to address to you thousand thanks, dear Mr Mariani, for this wine of youth which makes life, the force preserves at those which spend it and returns it to those which do not have it any more” (Emile Zola, 1895), “Dear Sir, I received such a help of your wine at the time of my last layers that I entreat you of me to make some send a new case urgently” (Leon Bloy, 1898). Legal drug, it contained between 6 to 7 Mg of cocaine in a bottle.

In France the cocainized version of the wine Mariani was authorized until 1910.

Mariani died in 1914. It is buried with the Cemetery of the Father-Lachaise.

The heirs to Mariani removed the wine in the years 1930. It created a new drink called Tonique Mariani which remained on sale in pharmacies until 1963.

Precursor of Coca-Cola This drink would have inspired creation in 1885 of Doctor Pemberton (Atlanta, the United States), French Wine Coca ancestor of the Coca-Cola which one knows today without alcohol (because of the prohibition of 1886 in the State of Georgia) and without cocaine (since 1906).
