Perlis

The State of the Perlis (Jawi: بيرلس), ( Perlis Indera Kayangan ) is smallest of Malaysia. It is located at the extreme North-West of the Malayan Péninsule and borders the Province of Satun in the south of the Thailand.

The capital is Kangar and Arau is the royal city. Padang Besar is the frontier main city.

Population

Approximately 198.335 inhabitants in 2000, including 166.200 Malayan (78%), 24.000 Chinese (17%), 3.700 Indians. 5.400 " autres".

History

Perlis belonged to the Kedah, subjected to the suzerainty of the Siam and the sultanate of Aceh. The conquest of Kedah by the Thais in 1821, worried the British colonizer installed in the neighboring state of the Perak. Also, in 1826 a treaty between the two powers finalized the recognition of sovereignty thaie on these Malayan states.

The anglo-Siamese Traité of 1909 forced the transfer by Siam of its two Malayan states to the Great Britain.

Economy

Agriculture dominates with rice growing, the sugar exploitation and the orchards. Fishing is a traditional resource.
