Perlaboration

The word perlaboration is a neologism invented to translate the German term: Durcharbeitung ( Work " through " ).
Pour to better include/understand its deep sense, one can see it like the contraction of by development.

Perlaboration at the Analyzing

Through the psychoanalytical Cure, the perlaboration is especially known like driving work with the eradication of the symptom. This work consists in repeating, during an analysis, the same scenes still and still until the Refoulement is put in failure and which a knowledge conscious of the history of the symptom is worked out, which makes it possible to remove it. Such a development rests partly on the capacity of association, the cure leading the subject to associate the conscious elements in order to reinforce its knowledge, including through a historical rebuilding.

The perlaboration rests on other elements of repetition. The transfer itself is repetition. But this type of repetition is opposed to the perlaboration: it is only about reviviscence in the place of the memory, of the repetition of identical instead of the memory. Several elements of repetitions are thus opposed.

Perlaboration in the analyst

The role of the analyst in the perlaboration is multiple:

  • on the level of the Suspended attention, the analyst locates the particular psychic movements

  • on the level of the rebuilding of the past, the analyst calls upon his reasoning, its theories

  • the perlaboration of the analyst can appear as floating theorization through account-returned of analysis
