Peoria (tribe)

The Tribu Peoria was one of the Amerindian tribe which composed the tribal group of the Illiniwek on the current territory of the Midwest to the the United States. After decimatebeing decimated by the diseases and the wars, the tribes Kaskaskia, Peoria, Piankeshaw, and Wea were confederated under the name of Peoria and were moved with the Kansas. After the American Civil War, the majority of the confederated tribes were moved in the Indian Territoire (today the Oklahoma). The tribe lost the recognition of the American State in 1959, but again in 1978 obtained it.

Peoria spoke a dialect about the language Miami-Illinois. The name “Peoria” comes from the name which they gave each other themselves in Illinois language, peewaareewa .

The tribe is today based with Miami (Oklahoma), in the north-eastern sector of this State.
