Penmarc\' H

Penmarc' H or Penmarch is a common department of the Finistere, in the area Brittany, in France. In the past Tréoultré .

Penmarc' H (PEN marc' H) would mean " head of cheval" into Breton because of the shape of its coast. It is only one assumption.

Geography

Penmarc' H, commune more in the west of the Country Bigouden, at the southern end of the Baie of Audierne (Brittany) is populated canton of the Guilvinec, with a population of 5  889 inhabitants in 1999 (21  813 for the whole of the canton).

The territory of the commune is particularly flat and of a very low altitude. Many marshes lagunaires are found there (log) from which some were drained and filled, in particular in Saint-Guénolé, in order to gain space for the habitat or the installation of artisanal buildings.

The commune is made up of four villages:

  • Penmarch-Borough, known formerly under the name of Tréoultré;

  • Saint-Guénolé (principal fishing port);
  • Kérity (secondary fishing port being directed towards the reception of the pleasure);
  • Saint-Pierre (port for the very small units)

Many small islands or very variable shelves of dimensions punctuate all the coast of Penmarc' H: most important are Etocs in the south of Kérity, the Saint-Nonna island in the west of Saint-Pierre.

The wearing of Saint-Guénolé who presents a western master key open full considered dangereous because of heavy weather, is protected by two almost granitic islands: Krugen in the south, Conq in the North-West. Krugen is connected to the coast by a sandy isthmus. Conq is connected to the coast by an artificial dam itself protected by concrete blocks which make it possible to better break the surge of the swell.

The granitic rock coast, (known as " coast sauvage" in Saint-Guénolé), is intersected with several beaches:

  • in north, the beach of Pors-Carn which is prolonged until the Pointe of the Torch (common of Plomeur);
  • in the west, the beach of the Joy;
  • in the south, the beach of Steir which starts in Kérity and is prolonged until Guilvinec.

What surprises while arriving at Penmarc' H it is the nudity of the landscape. Indeed, because of the configuration of the territory and the strong winds which blow there throughout the year, the vegetation is close-cropped on the commune; the trees of some importance which grow there often adopt a form " in drapeau" before being one day or the other shot down by a storm. ---- Communes bordering:
