Peninsular Malaysia is also known under the names of Western Malaysia ( Malaysia Barat ) and of Malaya ( Tanah Melayu ).
The peninsular term Malaysia is used more than Western Malaysia or Malaya (which became obsolete and dependant on the denomination of the colonial time).
However the three terms are synonymous. Malaya is always employed in the name of certain institutions (for example High Court off Malaya , Université of Malaya, Malayan Railway , etc). Until 1946, the term Malaya included also Singapore.
