Peninsula of the course York
The peninsula of the course York is located at the extreme north of the Queensland, in Australia. The course York , at the end of the peninsula, is the point more Septentrion Al of the Australian continent. She was baptized thus by the lieutenant James Cook in 1770 according to the Duc of York.
The end of the peninsula is separated from only 140 kilometers of the New Guinea by the Détroit of Torres strewn with islands. The west coast borders the Golfe of Carpentaria and the east coast borders the Mer of Coral. The peninsula of the course York makes approximately 137.000 km ² in all (what is vaster than the Greece or the England) but is only populated of 18.000 inhabitants.
Geographically, it is a territory extremely eroded, almost of plain, with some very low hills on the east coast. Highest of them the Iron Range ( Chaîne of Iron ) forms, noticed for its unusual tropical forests, where appear a certain number of species, such as the black Microglosse, which one in addition finds in New Guinea. The grounds are remarkably unfertile, even in comparison with other zones of Australia, being almost entirely laterized and in the majority of the so old and engraved cases that very little development is apparent today. It is because of this extraordinary poverty of the ground which the area is if little colonized: the grounds are answer if little the fertilization that the attempts at commercial cultures usually failed.
Climatically, the peninsula of the course York is neuse Mousson, with one wet season from November at April and a dry season from May to October. The total of annual precipitations is raised, extending between more than 2000 millimetres in Iron Range and in north of Weipa, until approximately 700 millimetres at the southern edge.
Principal industries are the Tourisme, the Mining, the fishing and the bovine breeding.
