Penguins de Pittsburgh

The Penguins of Pittsburgh are a professional frankness from Hockey of the the United States. They evolve/move in the principal championship of hockey of the North America: the National league of hockey. They belong to the conference of the East and the division Atlantique.
Penguins exist since the expansion of the National league of hockey in 1967.

For their first season, Penguins have been champions of division to five recoveries (1991, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998) and took part in two finales of the Coupe Stanley: in 1991 against the North Stars of Minnesota and the following year in 1992 against the Blackhawks of Chicago, gaining each time the invaluable trophy.

The expansion of the LNH in 1967-68

In 1967, the National league of hockey decides to double the number of team taking part in her championship. The town of Pittsburgh having already had experience of a team of hockey postulates in order to accommodate a frankness.

Indeed, in the years 1925 to 1930, the city lodged the Pirates of Pittsburgh. The latter remained until the end of the season 1929-30 with Pittsburgh before moving with Philadelphia and becoming the Quakers of Philadelphia, to try, in vain, to find financial balance.

A few years later, a new frankness is born then but this time in the American Ligue of hockey: the Hornets de Pittsburgh. The latter remains then in Pittsburgh until the end of season LAH 1955-56 before having to stop its activities because of its skating rink, the Duquesne Gardens, too decayed to continue to accommodate matches of hockey.

The frankness returns in the American League for the season 1961-62 and will last until the beginning of the Saison LNH 1967-1968 where the league decides to widen the competition and to accommodate new teams. The town of Pittsburgh belongs to the cities selected and thus takes part in the fishing out of expansion of the LNH in 1967 in exchange of a sum of 2 million Dollars.

The name is inspired by the skating rink new team, the Mellon Arena, and the particular shape of its roof, the skating rink being then called the Igloo. Despite everything, a contest was launched in the press and officially on February 10th, 1967 and afterwards: 26000 votes the name of the team is found. Despite everything, it is advisable to notice that Carol McGregor, wife of John McGregor who contributed to the creation of the team, were the first to propose the name, by declaring that she liked the Allitération out of P, that she would see the team well playing in black and white and especially for the shape of the Civic Arena. The first managing director, Jack Riley, proposed other names. Shamrocks (in reference to the team of hockey of the international League of hockey of the years 1930), Hornets or Eskimos was quoted but with final the Penguins - the Manchot S - is retained like name (often named the Pens ).

The results of the new teams are then blocked by the strict rules which allowed the six original teams to preserve the most talented players. The two best players of the first team of Pittsburgh are then the veterans Andy Bathgate (old Ranger) and Leo Boivin (in the past Bruins). The remainder of the team consists of young players or players in end of a career with the less talent. The total envelope of the wages is of: 315000 dollars and Bathgate has wages of: 25000 dollars. In comparison, six years later Gilbert Perreault and the Sabers of Buffalo signs a contract for a sum higher than the first envelope of Pens and the pay of Bathgate represents what a current high-speed motorboat of the LNH gains in a match.

The beginning of the year 1980

In spite of the good players present in the team (the defender Randy Carlyle, the striker Paul Gardner, Mike Bullard…), the team carries out catastrophic seasons, in particular during the seasons 1982-83 and 1983-84.
It is advisable all the same to notice that at the time of this last season, Eddie Johnston trainer of the time did not make large thing to avoid the last place. For example, he does not hesitate to send to play the guard, Roberto Romano with the minor team whereas this last is in great form. In the place Vincent Tremblay is established and it boxes 24 goals in four matches. Moreover about March, Randy Carlyle is exchanged with the Whalers de Hartford in exchange of a future player, player who will arrive only after the season. Thus, the players spend their time making return tickets between the frankness from LNH and the leagues minor. With final, season, Penguins finish with 38 points and the Devils of the New Jersey are at 41 points.

During its first match under its new colors, it marks the spirits while registering, as of its first time of play and on its first shooting, its very first goal. After four more seasons without eliminatory series for Penguins, Lemieux becomes (during the Saison LNH 1988-1989) the best pointer of the league and the frankness gives itself finally the means of shouldering Lemieux with the arrival at its sides of the defender Paul Coffey (coming from the Oilers d' Edmonton) as well as Kevin Stevens and John Cullen. Moreover, this season also sees the arrival with aims of Tom Barrasso since the Sabers of Buffalo. The team qualifies itself finally for the eliminatory series but it loses with the second round against the Flyers of Philadelphia.

It is during the Saison LNH 1990-1991 that Penguins reach the tops with the arrival in the team of the young person Jaromír Jágr who comes to form with Lemieux one of best the offensive pairs of the years 1990.

The recruits of quality continue to flow under the direction of the trainer Bob Johnson: Mark Recchi (of minor league), Joe Mullen, Bryan Trottier (both signing as free agents), Larry Murphy, Ron Francis, and Ulf Samuelsson (acquired by transactions).
Thus, the Penguins de Pittsburgh 1990-91 become one of the best teams of the league and rise finally Coupe Stanley and beat the North Stars of Minnesota in six matches.

At the time of the season Season LNH 1991-1992, Penguins lose their sick trainer of a Cancer and which dies some time after the beginning of the season. Scotty Bowman takes the direction of the team then. The Penguins of 1991-92 realize then doubled by eliminating the Blackhawks from Chicago in 4 matches.

Cancer once again inflicts a blow in Penguins in 1993. Indeed, after Johnson, the doctors diagnose in Lemieux the Maladie of Hodgkin and it is obliged to put its career between brackets. Despite everything, two months later, Lemieux returns on the ice and allows Penguins to finish the season with 56 victories, 21 defeats and 7 ties and to gain the first Trophée President of the history of the frankness as a team with the most points of the league (and in particular 17 matches without defeats of at a stretch to close the regular season). In spite of these very good performances, Penguins are made eliminate with the second turn from the eliminatory series by the Islanders from New York.

Until the end of the years 1990, Penguins continue to be a very good team of the league but without more and from many talented players pass in the rows of Pittsburgh (Martin Straka, Petr Nedvěd, Alexei Kovalev, Robert Lang, Kevin Hatcher and Darius Kasparaitis for example).

In 1997, Lemieux withdraws play and leaves its place of better pointer to its Jágr fellow-member. For all that it carried out and for all that it represents, the Temple of re-elected hockey does not await the end of the “normal” period three years to admit it in its center and that is done the same year (see below).

On another side, all these arrivals of talents ruin Penguins which come very close to bankruptcy and the team owes her safety only with her principal creditor: Lemieux. Indeed, the frankness owes him of the million dollars of not paid wages but Lemieux prefers to cancel the debt and to take again the club in order not to have to move it. Thus, it is the second time that Lemieux saves Penguins de Pittsburgh.

During the season 2000-01, the new one makes great noise within the world of world hockey: Super Mario is of return. As of its first match against the Maple Leafs of Toronto, he recalls to everyone which large player he is by marking three points. He carries out Penguins in eliminatory series once again but they are demolished by the Devils of the New Jersey finally of the conference Is. During this season, he becomes the first captain-player-owner of the history of the LNH.

Despite everything, finances of Penguins are not in good health and they are obliged to sell Jágr and František Kučera during summer 2001 with the Capitals of Washington in exchange of three players and 4,9 million dollars. The consequences of the absence of Jágr are not made wait and as of the news season, for the first time for 12 years, Penguins have been absent from eliminatory series and this absence involves new departures: Alexei Kovalev is sold (to the great displeasure fans) and Lang from goes away as a free agent.

The Saison LNH 2003-2004 is supposed being one year of rebuilding for Penguins which has the first choice of the fishing out of entry in the LNH 2003, chooses the goalkeeper Marc-Andre Fleury and also changes trainer (arrived of the former commentator and former player: ED Olczyk). However, the money worries are not solved and Lemieux starts to suffer from the hip at the beginning of the season. It must then remain at rest until the end of the season.

The consequences of the financial troubles result once again in a departure, that of Martin Straka which joined the Kings of Los Angeles, and Fleury is sent in the American league. Penguins finish then the season with more the small number of points of the history of the LNH (58 points) but do not have nevertheless the first choice of the fishing out of entry in the LNH 2004 (they are the Capitals of Washington which gains it, enabling them to make come Alexander Ovechkin.)

The cancelled season of 2004-2005

During the Season LNH 2004-2005 cancelled because of a lockout of the leaders of the LNH, several players evolve/move with the club affiliated to Penguins of the American Ligue of hockey: the Penguins de Wilkes-Barre/Scranton whereas others prefer to play in the European leagues (Aleksey Morozov or Milan Kraft for example).

The businesses still not going better for Penguins, the rumors starting of the frankness from Pittsburgh are done increasingly many and Lemieux itself states to doubt that the frankness can remain in Pittsburgh. The principal difficulty is the outdatedness of their skating rink (Mellon Arena), which is the oldest skating rink still used in LNH.
Several construction projects of skating rink are being studied currently as well in the town of Pittsburgh as in others: Portland cement (Oregon), Kansas City (Missouri), Winnipeg (Manitoba), Hartford (Connecticut) or Houston (Texas).

The era of Crosby

During the fishing out of entry in the LNH 2005, the various teams of the LNH are likely more or less same to obtain the first turn and a lottery is organized. The fate wants that it is Penguins which chooses in first and their choice is made on the rising high-speed motorboat of the Ligue of hockey major junior of Quebec: Sidney Crosby .
Moreover, during the Season LNH 2005-2006, a new system of wage ceiling is set up after an agreement between the association of the players and the owners of the teams. Penguins can then start again to build their team. They sign thus with free agents and carry out exchanges. The principal new players are called: Sergei Gonchar, John LeClair, Žigmund Pálffy or Jocelyn Thibault.

Lemieux always plays and dreams to take along Penguins in eliminatory series once again but it is constrained to stop and hang up again for good its shoes the January 24th 2006. The bad news cumulates: Pálffy, which suffers from the ligaments of the elbow, stops then Thibault is wounded.

The April 17th, Crosby becomes the youngest player of the history of the LNH to exceed the symbolic mark of the 100 registered points (it equalizes the number of points then realized by Lemieux during his first season). The following day during the last match of the season of Penguins, Crosby marks a goal and a master key and thus exceeds the score of Lemieux of 2 points.
Penguins finish the season in the last place of the conference (with the most boxed goals) in spite of a honourable end of season, only the Blues of Saint-Louis finishing behind Penguins.

The April 20th, two days after the end of the season, the direction of the team announces that Craig Patrick which was until there managing director would not be renewed in its functions. It occupied this station since December 1989 and had accompanied the team during the years 1990. Five days later Ray Shero sign a five year old contract as managing director of the team.

With the retirement of Lemieux, Penguins only seem from now on to rest on Crosby but the Russian high-speed motorboat Ievgueni Malkine is able to play within Penguins during the summer 2006. Moreover, certain players of Pittsburgh let predict certain qualities (Colby Armstrong or Michel Ouellet). With the first turn (2nd choice) of the fishing out of 2006, Penguins choose the young person Jordan Staal (brother of Eric Staal champion in 2006 with the Hurricanes of the Caroline). A few weeks later, Jarkko Ruutu sign in the frankness and thus Penguins muscler their defense allows.

September 5th, 2006, Ray Shero announces the signature of the Russian player Ievgueni Malkine coming from the Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Russian Superliga in the manpower of the Penguins 2006-07.

The March 2nd, Sidney Crosby mark a goal at the time of a defeat 3 to 2 against the Hurricanes of the Caroline. It is about sound 200e not since its beginnings and he becomes the youngest player of the history of the LNH to register 200 points and only the second player of less than 20 years to carry out this performance (first Wayne Gretzky in 1980-81 is ). At the end of the regular season, Penguins have counted 105 points, exceeding the hundred point for the first time for eleven seasons, and qualify for the first time since 2001 for the eliminatory Séries. The adventure does not last a long time since Penguins are isolated with the first turn by the Senators d' Ottawa.

Crosby finishing the season passed like better pointer of the regular season, it gains the Trophée Art Ross but also the trophies of better player of the season (Hart) and that of the best player according to the other players (Trophée To ballast B. Pearson). The team 2007-08 of the '' Pens '' will be able to rest once again on Crosby, appointed captain of the in May team but also on Malkin (elected better recruit 2006-07), on Jordan Staal (finalist of this same trophy) and of the two veterans Recchi and Roberts which signed both a prolongation of contract.

Shirts and logos of the frankness

Penguins used various shirts and logo since their creation.

The first shirt of Penguins had as a color the Blanc, the Bleu clearly and the dark blue and with simply written above PITTSBURGH in diagonal. The shirt residence was with dominant white while the external shirt was with dominant dark blue. In bottom of the shirt and handles, there were fine bands dark blue or black (for the respectively white shirt and dark blue). Moreover the logo of the frankness did not appear yet on the shirt. The first logo of the frankness then represented the penguin of the current logo but with a scarf and a black circle around this one. In this circle, in white was written in high PITTSBURGH and low PENGUINS.

These first colors of shirt come from Riley, the first president, originating in Toronto where it was to support Argonauts of Toronto Canadian Football whose shirt has the same colors. The idea to write the name of the city in diagonal was proposed by Bathgate in reference to the shirts of its former team, the Rangers of New York.

At the beginning of the season 1972-73, the circle of the logo disappears and the penguin grows bigger on the shirt. The remainder of the shirt remains overall the same one, even if colors are added on the handles.

The January 30th 1980, Penguins cover shirts Or and Noir for the first time of their history. The colors were adopted in order to standardize the behaviors of the various sporting teams of Pittsburgh and in order to try to attract more fans of the “city of the Champions”. Indeed, the Pirates (Baseball) gain in 1979 the National league and the Steelers (American football) gained the Super Bowl the January 20th 1980.

The Bruins of Boston reacted to this decision, their colors historical having always been the Jaune and the black, but Penguins answered by the fact there that the former team of hockey of Pittsburgh, the Pirates, carried already a shirt in these colors.

Put aside the colors, the shirts remain overall the same ones with the replacement of the dark blue by the black and the light blue by the color gold.

Of 1981 with 1985, the team alternatively carried in residence the old ones and the new shirts.

In 1993, the logo of Penguins is modernized and the shirts evolve/move. Thus, the penguin which patina leaves its place to a more serious drawing of a head of penguin and the external shirt differentiates completely from the shirt residence. This last, always to dominant white, raises the head of penguin while the external black shirt raises it on the arms and on the front of the shirt is marked in diagonal and capitals PITTSBURGH.

During the season 1995-96, Penguins belong to the five teams of the league has to decide to carry a third shirt for the special occasions. This shirt is with dominant black with the head of penguin above and the bands which continues the logo (see photo above). This third shirt will replace in 1997-98 the external black shirt.

For the season 1999-00, Penguins introduce a new third shirt with the old logo of the beginning (without the circle) of the penguin which patinates (logo of the titles of 1991 and 1992). In 2002, this third shirt is adopted like permanent shirt of the team and it is currently carried by the players at the time of the matches. Moreover on the shoulders of the current shirt there is the logo of the years 1993.

For the season 2007-08, the LNH decides to change the shirts of the thirty franknesses following a partnership with the equipment supplier Reebok. On this occasion, the shirt of Penguins also changes (even if that made already a year that Reebok was the mark of the team) and the logo of the years 1993 is abandoned. Free space is then used by the installation of a logo celebrating the 250e birthday of the town of Pittsburgh.

The cave of Penguins

Penguins play since their beginning in same the skating rink (also called arena ): the Melon Arena called Pittsburgh Civic Arena of 1961 with 1999. Because of its form, the Melon Arena was called the Igloo and could accommodate: 12000 people. Today the skating rink can accommodate: 16958 but is a very decayed enclosure (older skating rink used in the League).

The skating rink has a dome which can open and could in the absolute make it possible a meeting to be played open sky. However, no match never took place with open sky and in 1995, the addition of a table of score will prevent thereafter the possibility of opening the dome.

In 1990, the 41 {{exp|ème}} match of the Stars of the National league of hockey took place in the Melon Arena. Mario Lemieux and Paul Coffey, both players of Penguins, was selected on the first line of the Wales conference. Lemieux even finishes, in front of its public, better player of the match with 4 goals and equalized occasion consequently the record of goals registered during a match of the Stars (record held by Wayne Gretzky).

At the beginning of the season 2006-07, Penguins are with the research solution to build a new room cheaper and more modern. The November 28th 2006, Gary Bettman, Police chief of the LNH, declares that the only possibility so that Penguins remain in Pittsburgh would be that the construction project of an enclosure by the group Isle off Capri Casinos is accepted. This project, baptized Pittsburgh First , envisages to set up a new skating rink with gaming rooms and another conveniences for the fans.

The returned decision the December 20th 2006 is not favorable to Penguins and the project of the group Isle off Capri is rejected. Penguins are then in the search of a solution and the January 3rd 2007, a delegation of personalities of Penguins (whose Mario Lemieux) goes to Kansas City (Missouri) which is building a new skating rink and would be ready to accommodate the frankness.

Finally, the outcome is played the March 13rd 2007: since the day before, a rumor, announcing that Penguins would not leave, circulates over Internet and a few hours before the match of the 13 against the Sabers of Buffalo, the news is made public by the governors of the State, the mayor of Pittsburgh as well as the leaders of the frankness: Penguins will remain in Pittsburgh for at least still 30 years with a construction project of new an arena, in the same district as the Melon Arena. This new construction of 290 million dollars will be cofinanced by several parties of which Penguins de Pittsburgh. The room will have to open its doors during the season 2010-11 and the Melon Arena will be then shaven.

Penguins and their fans

Mascots

Like any American professional team, Penguins had different mascots during their history.

The first mascot dates from the second season of the Pens . It was about a true penguin born in Ecuador and naming Pete . It made its appearance at the time of a match against the Bruins of Boston on October 19th 1968. Pete died one month later of a Pneumonie. Indeed, people of the Civic Arena thought that he would like to have heat and thus had made so that he does not have cold.

Little time after, a second penguin made its appearance and Binkley, guard of the time remembers:
I remember that he died and that they brought another of them. They called it `Re-Pete'

This second mascot will have survived until the season 1971-72.

Since the beginning of the season 1993-94, Iceburgh deals with animating the pauses of the match in the skating rink of Pens. Iceburgh made an appearance in Sudden death , the film with Jean-Claude Van Damme of 1995 under the name of Icey .

Penguins in the local life of Pittsburgh

The city of Pittsburgh has a past of town of steel-works and the fans are today numerous to follow the performances of the team. Any time that was not always the case, thus at the time of the first season, the average multitude is of: 6008 people per match whereas the skating rink can accommodate the double of it.

January 17th, 2007, the direction of Penguins even makes write a message of thanks for the fans of Penguins and their assiduity. Indeed, since the beginning of the Season LNH 2006-2007, the rate of filling of the skating rink is of 95% of 23 matches and the season of before, the average of filling was of 94% over the year. Moreover, since the beginning of the season, 14 matches proceeded with closed counters (against 12 over the former season). At the end of the season, the total of matches played closed counter amounts to 30 for an average of filling of: 16425 spectators by matches.

It is thus normal that the players of Penguins lend themselves readily between the matches to meetings of dedication or visit sick people at the hospital. Moreover, the organization of Penguins rather often offers gifts to the spectators of the home matches (of the commemorative parts for example).

The table below presents part of the figures concerning the filling of the Melon Arena.
