Penguin Books

Penguin Books is a founded Publisher British in 1936 with London.

Allen Lane (1902-1970) begins its career of editor at Bodley Head, the publisher progressist pertaining to his uncle John Lane. He becomes director of the company in 1925 and chair in 1930. Since 1935, it starts to publish of independent of the republications in book of pocket and a year later founds Penguin Books to put between the hands of more a general public.

In addition to the traditional republications, it publishes also new titles which are sold with the moderate price of 6 pence part. Number of them militate for the cause of the British modernism, to start with design, a work of Anthony Bertram (1938) and work of the famous historian Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983). The Penguins books are well designed and use the typographical Caractère Gill Without, of a great legibility. The standard covers drawn by Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) contribute to give to the collection its strong visual identity. Pioneer of the paperbacks in the United Kingdom, Lane also contributed to improve the techniques of impression and bindings.
