Pengrowth Saddledome
The Pengrowth Saddledome (before Olympic Saddledome and Canadian Airlines Saddledome then called " The Saddledome ") is a general sports room located at Calgary, in the Alberta, close to Calgary Exhibition and Stampede.
Since 1983, its tenants are the Flames of Calgary which currently play in the league LNH. In 1995, another team of Hockey settles there, the Hitmen of Calgary of the Western Hockey League. The Calgary Roughnecks of the National Lacrosse League are tenants there since 2001. The arena offers 17.139 places in configuration Hockey (19 289 with the 300 level), the maximum capacity is of 20.100 places for certain events, it has 72 continuations of luxury, 1.461 seats of club, 2 super continuations and 6 restaurants and bars.
History
The Pengrowth Saddledome was inaugurated the October 15th 1983 under the name of Olympic Saddledome , because it was going to accommodate the tests on ice of the Winter Olympics of 1988 being held with Calgary. Its cost of construction was of 100 million CAN and it was conceived by the cabinet of architects Graham McCourt Architects.It was the first principal arena in North America able to accommodate matches of Hockey with a international skating rink with dimensions (61 m X 30 m). The Flames of Calgary assumed the management of Saddledome in 1994. In autumn of this year, restorations being assembled to more than $37 million were undertaken. The Saddledome was officially reopened the October 25th 1995. They included 46 Club continuations, plus two Super Continuations and a section of seats of club with a restaurant and living rooms. The building was famous Canadian Airlines Saddledome when the Airline company Canadian Airlines, whose seat was based with Calgary became the sponsor of the room in July 1996. This started a polemic for many Calgarians which had been opposed has what the arena loses the name " Olympic ", and which was also opposed to the decision to cover the roof of the dome with the logo of Canadian Airlines.
In 2000, Pengrowth Management bought the rights of name of the arena which was had by Canadian Airlines.
Structure
The roof in the shape of saddle is a reversed hyperbolic Paraboloïde, it covers 12.000 square meters, but is of only 60 centimetres thickness. The design of the roof was began again on the Capital Center localized close to Washington DC (demolished in 2002).
