Penglai Shan

In China, the mountain of Penglai , or Penglai Shan (蓬萊山), is the place where the Eight immortal hold their banquet. Its fruits are the elixir of long life and for this reason Qin Shi Huang, the emperor founder of the Dynastie Qin, made it seek.

According to the Shanhaijing , the mountain serat on an island in the east of the Sea of Bohai. At the time of IQ Shi Huang, the islands of the immortal were three: Penglaï, Fangzhang (方丈) and Yingzhou (瀛州); thereafter, Daiyu (岱輿) and Yuanjiao (員嬌) were added to the list. The Way of immortal the having been absorbed by the Taoism, these islands belong to the grounds of immortality of this religion.

With the Japan this place is called Horai ; it is described in the Kwaidan or Stories and strange studies of things of Lafcadio Hearn.
