Penfeld
The Penfeld , Breton Penfell in , is a coastal Fleuve French, 16 km length, on the left bank of which the town of Brest developed, in the Finistere.
It takes its source on the commune of Gouesnou, passes by Bohars and Guilers (hamlet bearing the name of the river) before leading to the sea in Rade of Brest. Penfeld settled in the old course of the Aulne, collected towards the West by the opening of the Narrow part of the Roads of Brest, at the time of the interglacial cycles of the quaternary era. What explains its depth, allowing boats of fort drawing from water to go up enough far upstream, according to the tides whose marling can reach up to 8 meters.
In Brest, Penfeld is spanned by the Pont of Recouvrance, which is the largest raising bridge of Europe.
On its last kilometers, with escarpées banks (slopes precipice from 25 to 30 meters in height), Penfeld is included in the naval Base of Brest (National marine), old Arsenal of Brest, zone under military control dedicated to construction, naval repair and the support of the squadron of the Atlantic.
With its mouth, on a site whose military value is recognized since Antiquity and beyond that, a castle-extremely was built builds essentially at the 15th century.
