Penetrometer
The penetrometer is an apparatus used in Géotechnique. It makes it possible to calculate resistance at a peak and the acceptable maximum constraint.
There exist two kinds of penetrometer: dynamic penetrometers and static penetrometers. A dynamic penetrometer consists of a stem provided with an anvil. A " mouton" , i.e. a mass, falls on the anvil, which makes it possible to insert the stem in the ground. By counting the number of blow of sheep so that the stem is inserted in the ground of twenty centimetres, one can deduce resistance from it from the ground. Thus, one can calculate the acceptable maximum constraint and resistance at a peak. In geotechnics, the advantage of the penetrometer is that it makes it possible to have, almost uninterrupted, the resistance of the ground. The disadvantage is that it does not allow a visual recognition of the ground.
