By charter of the March 24th 1770, the denomination was changed into Penafiel , while the statute of Cité was recognized to him. The same year, on June 1st 1770, by bubble of the pope Clement XIV, the city was set up in seat of a diocese of Penafiel, by dismemberment partial of the diocese of Oporto. The diocese will have known only one bishop of full exercise, until its renunciation in 1777. The November 11th 1778, all the parishes of the diocese were reincorporated in the diocese of Oporto.

The title of bishop of Penafiel, like those of bishops of other removed Portuguese dioceses, continues however to be periodically granted to certain auxiliary bishops or coadjutors.
