Pehr Osbeck

Pehr Osbeck is a explorer and Naturaliste Swedish, born the May 9th 1723 with Hålanda (province of Västergötland) and dead the December 23rd 1805 with Hasslöv (province of Halland).

Osbeck joined the Université of Uppsala in 1745 and becomes there a pupil of Carl von Linné (1707-1778).

On board the vessel Prins Carl , he travels in Asia of 1750 to 1752 to study there the Natural history and the people autochtones. During this voyage, it spends in particular four months in the area of Canton.

It publishes in 1757 the report of its voyage in China, Dagbok öfwer in ostindisk resa åren 1750,1751,1752 . This work is translated into German in 1762, in French in 1765 and English in 1771. One of the most interesting part of its work is the ichtyologic study of China published under the name of Iter Chinensis .

It assembles a vast collection now preserved in Sweden and at the the United Kingdom. It brings back in particular 600 plants to Linné. It becomes Pasteur parishes of Hasslöv and Våxtorp in 1760 and Doctor of Divinity in 1778.

Its name is commemorated in the Osbeckia L. of the family of the Melastomataceae.
