Peerage of Scotland

The peerage of Scotland ( peerage off Scotland ) gathers all the titles of peerages ( peerage titles ) create in the Royaume of Scotland before 1707. Peerage gathered the members of the House of Lords in the Scottish Parlement. After 1707, the kingdoms of England and Scotland were plain. One then did not create any more new pars of Scotland and with those the right was denied to sit at the House of Lords. They could elect however sixteen “pars representatives” ( representative peers ) which sat at the House of Lords of the Parliament of Great Britain. In 1963, the “law of peerage” ( peerage act ) again granted to the pars of Scotland the right to sit at the House of Lords, right which was lost with the “law of the House of Lords” ( House off Lords Act ) of 1999, which removed quasi-all the hereditary seats.

Different the titles from the peerage of Scotland is Duc or duchess for a woman ( duke and duchess ), Marquis or marchioness for a woman ( marquess and marchioness , Count or countess for a woman ( earl and countess ), Vicomte or viscountess for a woman ( viscount and viscountess ) and Lord off parliament shortened in Lord . There is no title corresponding to Lord off parliament for a woman, one off speaks women holding a title about Lord parliament ( holder off has lordship off parliament ). To the difference of the other titles of peerage, much from the titles Scot can pass to women. Another Scottish characteristic, the Viscounts are entitled to the particle “of” front their title, though only the Viscounts of Arbuthnott and Oxfuird use it. The heirs to a title of Viscount or Lord off parliament take the title of “Master of (+nom of the title)” ( master off ) or of “mistress” ( mistress ).
