Pedro Menéndez de Avilés
Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (February 15th, 1519 with Avilés in the Asturies, † with Santander on September 17th, 1574), admiral and Spanish corsair, remains in the history like the founder of the counter of St Augustine in Florida, the oldest port European of North America (August 28th, 1565). It destroyed the competitor French counter of Fort Caroline the same year. Governor of the Spanish Florida , it took the control of the strait of the Bahamas, strengthened several ports of the Antilles and bound negotiations with the Indians Calusa.
