Pedro Cebrián there Agustín
Pedro Cebrián there Agustín , Count de Fuenclara (Spanish: Gift Pedro Cebrián there Agustín, cop of Fuenclara ) (April 30th 1687, Luceni, Spain - August 22nd 1752, Madrid) was a Spanish diplomat then Vice-roi of News-Spain of the November 3rd 1742 with the July 8th 1746.
Diplomat and courtier
He is first of all ambassador extraordinary near the courses of Vienna, Dresden and Naples, then majordomo and rider of Infant Felipe. He is made member of the orders of San Genero and the Golden Fleece.
Viceroy
The January 31st 1742, King Philippe V of Spain, personally, names Cebrián there Agustín viceroy of News-Spain. It arrives at Veracruz the October 5th 1742 and makes its solemn entry with Mexico City the November 3rd 1742 and takes its functions there. It replaces Pedro Malo de Villavicencio, president of the Audiencia, which took over temporarily the duties since the death of the preceding Viceroy, Pedro of Castro there Figueroa.
As a Viceroy, it makes repair the aqueduct of Chapultepec in Salta del Agua and pave many streets of Mexico City, repair and increase the Calzada de San Antonio Abad (fitted of San Antonio Abad). It establishes the estancos (governmental monopoly) on the gunpowder, the salt mines, the ice and the juego of gallos (Cockfight). It prohibits the Des. and card decks.
According to the instructions of Spain, Cebrián Agustín collects there ethnic, historical information and statistics concerning the colony. It orders with the geographer Jose Antonio Villaseñor there Sánchez an official estimate of the population of News-Spain which will be transmitted to the Court. The estimate is completed in April 1744 and counts 3 ' 865 ' 000 inhabitants. The other results are contained in the work of Villaseñor: Theatro Americano, descripción general of los reinos there provincias of Nueva España (2 flights., 1646-48). This document is an important data source today, for the historians, concerning the colonial time.
The June 2nd 1743, after investigation, it makes stop the Italian knight Lorenzo Boturini Bernaducci (1702-53). Boturini had requested gifts to cap Notre-Dame de Guadalupe of a gold crown and product of the documents of papacy without royal authorization. During its arrest, various documents of value, Codices and written concerning the ancient cultures that Boturini had collected, are confiscated to him and will never be returned to him. In 1744 Boturini is sent in Spain where it is the proof of its good intentions and is released. The King will appoint it historian of the Indies. He will receive even the permission to turn over to News-Spain. In Madrid he will write the history of old Mexico, which will remain not published until its death in 1753.
July 1st 1743, the British admiral George Anson captures the galleon of the treasure of China Nuestra Señora de Covadonga which travelled of Manila towards News-Spain. The goods and the 1 ' 318 ' 843 pesos of money ingots which it transported, are seized. Anson will sell its catch for £ 400 ' 000 in China. The viceroy will be accused of perfidy in this business, but there was no continuation.
In 1744 a riot bursts with Puebla because of a minor religious affair. The Viceroy, in order to visit more solemn his to the bishop, ordered that one sounds the bells. The population interprets this as the sign of the Canonization of a preceding bishop, Juan de Palafox there Mendoza, for which the population had made countryside. When crowd realizes that it is not the case, a riot bursts. The Viceroy then sends his troops against the rioters, there were victims and it will be criticized for its decision.
It brings its assistance to the forwarding of Jose de Escandón which will explore and colonize the Nuevo Santander (Tamaulipas). It leaves Mexico City the March 5th 1744.
Suffering, he asks to be raised of his mandate and returns to Spain in July 1746. He dies in Madrid the August 6th 1752.
