Pechiney

Pechiney was a French, active industry group in the fields of the Aluminum (production and transformation), of the electrometallurgy, packing, chemistry, and nuclear fuel.

History

The origin of the Pechiney group goes back to creation, in 1855, of the company " Henry Blackbird and Compagnie" to produce soda with Salindres in the Gard. The company takes then the name of " Company of the chemicals of Went and the Camargue, Henry Merle and Compagnie" (1855), then of " Company of the chemicals of Went and the Camargue, A.R. Pechiney and Compagnie (PCAC) ". Pechiney was the name of the father-in-law of Alfred Rangod, managing director of the company of 1877 to 1916, that this one had acollé with its name.

During its existence, this group, initially centered on aluminum, will have had a very variable perimeter, because it diversified, absorbed (or amalgamated with) of other companies, was centred on certain activities.

Aluminum always remained one of its essential activities, to which other metallurgy were added, chemistry, nuclear power, packing.

In 1971, Pechiney amalgamates with Ugine Kuhlmann: Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann (PUK) becomes the first French private industry group.

In 1982, the Pechiney group is nationalized; it is privatisé in 1995, under the presidency of Jean-Pierre Rodier.

The repurchase of the activity of packing of Triangle in 1988 gave place to an offense of initiate (see Affaire Pechiney-Triangle).

In 2000, a merger plan with three presented by Pechiney, the Canadian Alcan and Switzerland Algroup is refused by the European commission which judges that there could be Dominant position abuse in several fields, in particular the food car, construction, preserves, and packing. The idea of the three partners was to constitute a vast international whole of 22 billion dollars.

After the repurchase of Alusuisse (Algroup Ltd) in 2001 by Alcan, the Pechiney group is repurchased in 2003 by the Canadian group Alcan. To conform to the non-competition clauses, Alcan separates from some of its activities. It is for this reason that the whole of its activities of rolling were gathered in a company, named Novelis, which became independent of the Alcan group.
