Peak of Adam
The Pic of Adam (Singhalais Sri Pada or Samanala , Tamoul Sivanolipatha Malai , Arab Al-Rohun ) is a high conical mountain of 2 243 m, one of the most important tops of the island of the Sri Lanka and which is regarded as a holy place by the Hindu shivaïtes, Buddhist and Moslem .
The Hindu pilgrims make the rise of the thousands of steps which lead to the top in order to reach it to raise it sun and to see the triangular form of its shade sweeping the surrounding countryside. This rise lasts several hours and is generally rather made in the month April.
At the top of the mountain, one finds, dug in the rock, a cavity of almost two meters, supposed being a print of step. The hindouists see there the trace of the passage of Vishnu, or of Çiva. The Moslems claim that it is about the print which the foot of Adam made, when he was driven out Jardin of Eden, to which the island of Ceylon east very close, and fell on Earth, which explains the name given to the mountain. One also claims that it is about the print of foot of Bouddha, of Shiva or Saint Thomas.
Ibn Battûta is the first author to report his rise, at the 14th century, it confirms the presence of iron chains installed like handrail and which had been described by Marco Polo.
The Peak of Adam is however not the culminating point of the island, this one is the mount Pidurutalagala which rises with 2 524 Mr.
