Pbde

Pbde is an expression used by the young people Morocco ains meaning " Not to drink Of Eau".

Origin of the pbde term

It is as from the Nineties that the alcohol importation in the area tangéroise of the north of Morocco is legalized by the mayor of the town of Tangier: Mr. Benabderrazik. Soon the trade with the countries of Europe and with the Russia is accentuated and one then finds alcohol in all the grocers tangéroises called popularly bakals.

However if the sale is authorized, it is it only for the foreigners and in spite of this liberalization of the sale, manners do not remain unchanged about it and the liquor followers remain perceived as of the “skayris” (which means “alcoholic” in the jargon tangérois).

Thus, in answer to this paranoia of the “skayri”, developed within youth tangéroise a whole code allowing the blooming of the alcohol amateurs. It is in these circumstances that the term “pbde appeared” which literally means “Not to drink Water” and which indicates the action of drinking these substances considered to be illicit by the authorities and yet so expensive with most of the tangérois. One speaks thus about a pbde for the simple play activity or more generally about Pbde with a large P to indicate what became much more than one tradition.

Devoted places

The town of Tangier comprises many corners and recesses, small lanes, dark staircases which are places devoted to the pbde.

The pbde of street (or street-pbde) as it is usually called and an “impromptu” pbde generally fruit of a paseo (action to stroll in the city) night and which is held with same the street in isolated places, dark, well off éventel informer. It can last several hours when the place is well chosen or on the contrary led to an escape under the threat of the estafettes. The pbdes are sometimes the cause of true accrochades (" tchéndila") between police officers and young pbdeists.

The pbde “indoor” is animated generally less since it is held in a closed place. It does not reflect nevertheless the spirit of Pbde (see following paragraph) since it is connected then with the traditional alcohol consumption.

Philosophy of Pbde

What was in the beginning effective means of thwarting the machiavelic denunciations of the informers became thereafter and until today a true philosophy of life. It should be known that the pbde is practiced mainly by the young people tangérois disillusioned by the company in which they live and rigidities of manners which surround them. They thus find by this activity the means of disavowing established conformism and of affirming their free spirit. A large pbdeist will say besides: “The pbde is source of thought”.

Moreover, the pbdeists assert their anticonformist origins while being attached to movements like the Punk or while indicating themselves like “wire of Kurt Cobain”
