History
-
At the time Gallic, the South-Loire was then populated by the Celts Ambilatres.
- Under the Roman Republic, Jules César attached the territory of these people to the large province of Aquitaine and to Limonum, the old capital of the Pictons,
- Under the Roman Empire, " Ratiatum Pictonum Portus" , today Rezé, became the principal port of the Pictons. This harbor city is indicated by Ptolémée, and Strabon as located at the extremity of the territory of the Pictons, at the border with the Namnètes.
-
in 820, to protect at the same time this territory and the coastal islands (Noirmoutier and Bouin) threatened by the Vikings, it was decided the creation of the county of Herbauges, vast military possession of the Low-Poitou having for Ratiatum chief town, today Rezé, was delimited in north by the Loire, in the east by the Nantes Sèvre, at midday by Large Lay, the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The county of Herbauges gathered the country of Retz, plus the valley of Clisson, the Mauges and Tiffauges. This county, named Herbauges, maintained military forces rather important, being able with the improvist to go on threatened points.
- It is only in IXe century that the area in the South of the Loire, took the name of Country of Retz (or of Ray).
- In 851, the Treated of Angers signed between the king of Francie Western, Charles the Bald person and Erispoé with Angers, gave to the Brittany, the country of Rennes, the Nantes country and the country of Retz, which will form the Marches of Brittany. This treaty of Angers delimited the borders of the historical Brittany.
- In 1790, Paydrets become citizens of the department of the Loire-Inférieure.
