Pausanias , in Greek old Παυσανίας († 469), was a politician and a general Spartan.
Biography
Family member royal of the Agiades, he is the son of Cléombrote I {{er}} and the nephew of Léonidas I {{er}}, the hero of the Thermopyles, and Cléomène I {{er}}. Regent of Sparte during the minority of the son of Léonidas Ier, his cousin Pleistoarchos, it orders the army of the Greek which triumphs with Platées. In 479 and 477, it delivers the Greek cities of Asia, seizes Cyprus then of Byzance.
Pausanias goes odious very quickly to the Greeks by the brutality of his command. It is suspected of wanting to constitute a kingdom and Sparte points out it brutally. He is considered but discharged and turns over to Byzance as a simple adventurer. Cimon drives out it city towards 472 - 471 and Pausanias settles in Troade renewing its contacts with the Perse. It fears the new power of Athens with the Ligue of Délos and is opposed to the conservative party with unfavourable with remote forwardings and more anxious Sparte of the situation in the Peloponnese and of the rise to power of Argos. Again recalled to Sparte, it is betrayed by one of its servants, who reveals his plans with the éphore S.
To escape the punishment, Pausanias takes refuge in the temple of Athéna Khalkiokos. Whereas the éphores hesitate as for its fate, his/her Théano mother deposits a brick in front of the door of the sanctuary, and leaves without saying word (Diodore of Sicily, XI, 45,6). The éphores decide then to immure it. Pausanias dies of hunger towards 469.
