Paul Woods

Paul Woods (born the April 12th 1955 with Hespeler with the Canada) is a former professional player of hockey of the National league of hockey and is today a presenter of television for the matches of the Red Wings de Détroit.

Career

Fished out by the Canadian of Montreal during the Fishing out amateur of the LNH 1975 51e on the whole and by the Toros of Toronto to the 84e row of the Fishing out amateur of the AMH 1975, Woods got along with the Canadian, preferring the LNH with AMH, like the majority of the young players of its time. Not having however its place within alignment charged with high-speed motorboats of the Canadian, Woods took the road of the American Ligue of hockey.

He will however never play for Montreal. The LNH founded the Waiver Draft in 1977 and Woods was brought to Detroit via this very first fishing out intra-league, then still at the experimental state. At the time, the majority of people made fun of Wings who had spent 50.000 dollars for Woods, a young 19 years left winger who played for the club-school of the Canadian and seemed promised with a career of player of the minor leagues. At the end of the season however, the majority of these same people were intended to say that it was the best acquisition of Red Wings since years.

Woods, which gained twice the Coupe Calder with the Voyageurs of Nova Scotia, was promoted within a trio with Dale McCourt and Bill Lochead and cumulated 19 goals and 23 master keys with its season recruit; it became also very quickly one of the favorites of the crowd of the Joe Louis Arena because of his ethics of work and its striking down speed. It became at 19 years the youngest captain of the history of Wings and embraced to perfection the defensive role which was assigned to him. Its trainer Bobby Kromm had only witty remarks about it, and much time of ice and the defensive roles entrusted to him, in which he excelled. Already at its season recruit, Woods was extremely effective to kill numerical inferiorities and countered already the best unfavourable players like a veteran, a talent which did not fail to impress its fellow-members, his adversaries, like several experts. Although being exclusively offensive on the level junior, Woods not only accepted, but especially appreciated the defensive tasks which were entrusted to him, tasks of which he discharged with wonder during the seven seasons that he passed to Detroit. A wound at the coasts curbed its career, and it is decreased Woods which finished its career in the LAH with the Red Wings of Adirondack in 1985. It returned shortly after in trimmings of Red Wings, having quickly had an offer to take part in the broadcasting of the matches of Wings, which it does always today.

It will mark 196 points, including 72 goals, in 501 matches of LNH. It represented also the Canada with the Championnat of the world of hockey 1979.
