Paul Vergès

Paul Vergès is a Politician French born the March 5th 1925 with Ubon Ratchathani, in Thailand.

Paul Vergès is the son of a teacher Vietnamese and the doctor Raymond Vergès, then French Consul in Thailand. It passes its youth to the Meeting as from the return of his father in this island in 1931.

He is the brother of the lawyer Jacques Vergès of which he would be the twin. He studies with him with the Lycée Leconte de Lisle of Saint-Denis, where are also provided education for Raymond Barre and Auguste Legros.

Resistant as of 1942, it becomes militant Communiste and anticolonialist. When Alexis of Villeneuve, adversary of his/her father to the legislative elections, is assassinated right in the middle of crowd piled up to hear it near the cathedral of Saint-Denis the May 25th 1946, he judged and is condemned by bases then amnestied by the political power.

In 1956, it is elected with the National Assembly IVe République.

It founds the Communist party réunionnais in 1959 and takes again the newspaper Témoignages rested by his father. He becomes mayor of the Port in 1971 European and appointed in 1979. He makes a success of all this while being interdict of radio and Télévision, like his party, until in 1981.

He resigns of his mandate of deputy in 1987 to express his dissension on the law of social parity of the December 31st 1986, which would deprive Réunionnais of their right to the social equality. Re-elected appointed in March 1993, it leaves the direction of the PCR with Élie Hoarau in 1993. This passage of relay does not mark the end of its political career.

Paul Vergès is elected senate or of the island the April 15th 1996. In September of the same year, he alerts the opinion on the need for making study of the consequences of the Climate warming, a national priority. The September 19th 2001, it makes vote, unanimously of the two parliamentary assemblies, a law recognizing this priority. He is re-elected senator the September 23rd 2001. He is in addition elected president of the District council of the Meeting in 1998 and is re-elected in April 2004.

In 2002, it is named president of the National observatory on the effects of climate warming in Metropolitan France and in the departments and overseas territories, the ONERC. Generally, the Environnement becomes a source of important concern of its political action.

In June 2004, he is finally elected with the the European Parliament for the Outre-mer district which includes/understands Saint-Pierre-and-Miquelon, the Guadeloupe, the Martinique, the Guyana, the Réunion, Mayotte, the New Caledonia, the French Polynésie and Wallis-and-Futuna and which on the whole comprises 3 seats out of 732. In 2005, it is replaced by Gélita Hoarau with the French Sénat not to remain in situation of office plurality of mandates.

Father of Pierre Rods, it was very marked by accidental death in October 1988 of different sound wire Laurent, deputy and general adviser.

At the time of the last presidential election, it gives its support for Marie-Georges Buffet.

Parliamentary candidate in the 3rd district of the Meeting, it is largely beaten with the second turn by UMP Didier Robert, collecting only 37% of the votes.

He is the current president of the National observatory on the Effects of Climate warming (ONERC).
