Paul Sébillot
Paul Sébillot is a Ethnologue, writer and painter French, originating in Brittany. It was born with Matignon (department of the Coast-with Armor) the February 6th 1843, it died in Paris the April 23rd 1918. Number of its work are devoted to its province of origin.
Biography
Formation
Resulting from a former Breton family and a line of doctors since his back grandfather, his father Pierre Sébillot made L `object of a quotation for his devotion during the cholera epidemic of 1832 to Saint-Cast-the-Guildo, it becomes mayor of Matignon in 1848. After studies with the communal college of Dinan, he moves with Rennes to undertake studies of right, which he will complete with Paris in 1863. Very interested by the Painting, it takes courses near Augustin Feyen-Perrin and in 1870 it exposes to the Salon a fabric entitled Rochers with Low tide , which one finds with the Exposure of London of 1872.
The writer and the folklorist
Sébillot will continue its pictorial activity until in 1883, period during which fourteen of its tables are exposed to the living rooms of Paris and two with the World Fair of Vienna in 1873. Its inspiration is largely on the Breton littoral. He collaborates in several reviews as an art critic: the Public property , the Reform , French Art and free Art .In parallel it starts a literary career by the publication in 1875, of the Republic, it is the peace whose success requires two republications the same year. It is at that time that it meets another folklorist François-Marie Luzel who carries out the translation of the text in Breton. Consequently its publications will be regular. In 1877, it creates the Apple , Breton association and Norman, of which he becomes president the following year (in 1889, will be created a monthly review of the same name). 1881, creation with Charles Leclerc of the Collection of the popular Literatures of all the nations , the contribution of Sébillot is the oral literature of High-Brittany . In 1882, it is the birth of the Company of the popular Traditions, which organizes the Dinners of my Mother Oye , meeting of folklorists which gives place to the edition of a new review of this name. From 1886 becomes the general secretary of association and assumes the direction of the review.
In 1889, it is the first Congress of the popular traditions in Paris, it is named principal private secretary to the public Ministry of Labor, when his/her brother-in-law, Yves Guyot, are named public Minister for Labor. It remains at this station until in 1892, observatory ideal which allows him to collect many information which will be the subject of volume Public works and the mines in the traditions and superstitions of all the countries , in 1894. The following year, it gathers the list of its publications (books and articles), under the title Autobibliographie .
In 1905, it is named President of the Company of anthropology.
He was member many associations or learned societies, among which one can quote: the Company of the Men of letters, the Company of linguistics, the Company of anthropology, the archaeological Company, the archaeological Company of the Finistere, the Association of the republican journalists, the Company of ethnography and national art and, at the international level, the Finno-ugric Company of Helsingsfors, the Company of the Walloon Folklore, the Society Folklore of Chicago, of American Society Folklore, the Andaluz Folklore, the Society Folklore of London, of the Swiss Company of the popular traditions, the Company of the Portuguese writers.
