Biography
Wire of a psychiatrist, he becomes lawyer, doctor in Roman law, defender of the co-operatives. He is socialist militant as of 1904 and appointed socialist of the Aveyron of 1928 with 1940, of 1945 with 1951 and of 1956 with 1958.Favorable to the participation of the Socialists in the capacity, it leaves SFIO to join the republican socialist Union. It belongs to the government Leon Blum in 1936 as under-secretary of State (liquid mines, electricity and fuels) then government Camille Chautemps as under-secretary of State to Public works. He is Minister for Labor from January to August 1938 in the cabinet Edouard Daladier. He resigns when this one calls into question the 40 hours week.
He refuses with vehemence the full powerss with Pétain in July 1940 (see: List of the 80 members of Parliament having voted against the full powerss with Philippe Pétain on July 10th, 1940) and takes part in the Résistance. Its action in favor of the Jews is worth to him to see his name registered on the list of the Justes among the Nations with Yad Vashem. It again joined the S.F.I.O during the Occupation.
With the Release, he is Minister for the Supply of November 1944 in May 1945 (government De Gaulle) and sees himself called “Ramadan” or “Ramadiète”, although he gives the example while working in an office not heated; he occupies the ministry for Justice in December 1946 - January 1947 (ministry Leon Blum). He is, in 1947, the first President of the council after the adoption of the Constitution of the IVe République. He is Minister for Defense in 1948-49 (government Henri Queuille) and for the Economic affairs and financial in 1956-1957 (government Guy Mollet). He takes part in May 1948 in the Congrès of $the Hague.
Under the Popular front, it makes adopt important social laws. It prepares in particular a law over the industrial accidents, the retirement and the 40 hours. Confronted with enormous difficulties in all the fields as head of government, true Glutton for work, it draws aside the Communists of its government putting thus fine at the three-party government (PC, S.F.I.O, M.R.P.), makes vote the statute of the Algérie and the accession of France to the Marshall plan. It sends the army to put an end to the Malagasy insurrection. The War crimes made at that time (thousand to two thousand victims) were allotted by error to the military command, even with the Ramadier government, whereas they are the facts of uncontrolled soldiers.
It is withdrawn this same year, officially because of the persistence of the strikes. Its name is associated with the automobile label, introduced in 1956.
It was also Franc-maçon and mayor of Decazeville of 1919 with 1959.
