Paul Motian
Stephen Paul Motian is a Batteur and Percussioniste of American Jazz of origin Arménie, born on March 25th, 1931 with Philadelphia. It is one of the modern beaters among most recognized, mainly because of its contribution to release the battery of its role forcing of guardian of the Tempo.
Biography
Paul Motian begins the battery at 12 years. He becomes professional musician in 1954, but makes known himself especially as from 1959, when he integrates the trio of the pianist Bill Evans, with Scott LaFaro, and this until 1964. He integrates then the trio of Paul Bley (1963-64) and the American four-bit byte of Keith Jarrett (1967-76).Motian is also a type-setter and important leader, recording for ECM in the Seventies and at the beginning of 80, then for Soul Notes Records, JMT Records, and finally for Winter & Winter. Its most known group is undoubtedly that which it carries out with the guitarist Bill Frisell and the saxophonist Joe Lovano, sometimes joined by the Bassiste S ED Schuller, Charlie Haden, Marc Johnson, as well as other instrumentalists, for example Jim Pepper, Lee Konitz, Dewey Redman or Geri Allen. Beside the original compositions, the trio recorded homages to Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, as well as a series of albums entitled Paul Motian one Broadway , which interpret the standard in an original way.
In 1990, it founds the Electric BeBop Band , by which will pass from many young people instrumentalists. In particular, the first saxophonist of the group was Joshua Redman. The group comprises from now on two, not the least since it is (currently) about Chris Potter and of Chris Cheek. The bass player Steve Swallow has a time also belonged to the Electric BeBop Band .
In spite of its implication as a Sideman of large pianists (Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Keith Jarrett), and the quality of its play in trio with piano (Marilyn Crispell, Stéphan Oliva and particularly within Tethered Moon with Masabumi Kikuchi), the work of Motian as a leader seldom calls upon the piano, Motian obviously preferring the guitar, in addition its first instrument. In addition to its trio with Bill Frisell, its first trio included the guitarist Sam Brown, and its Electric BeBop Band comprises two electric guitars.
Esthetics
The play of battery of Motian is very particular. It is one of the first beaters to be itself released of the role of rhythm section and accompaniment reserved for the battery, to evolve to a role much more melody and poetic.
