Paul Meurice
Paul Meurice , born in 1820 and died in 1905 in Paris is especially known for the friendship which bound it to Victor Hugo during many years.
In 1836, eighteen years old, Paul Meurice, that his friend Auguste Vacquerie presented to Hugo, attends this last assiduously. It has literary inclinations and is tested, during several years, with a career of playwright, making represent several parts ( Falstaff in 1842 under the pseudonym of Leon Marcel).
Later, in 1848, Hugo makes of it the editor association of the newspaper, the Event , which it has just founded (what will be worth the prison in to him 1851).
Its complicity with Hugo is very large: the poet will be pilot with the marriage of his friend with Palmyre Granger, girl of the painter Jean-Pierre Granger.
During the twenty years of exile of Victor Hugo, Meurice with the load of the financial and literary interests of the proscribed writer. In addition, it continues its own literary career, publishing Romance (it collaborates with Alexandre Dumas of which it will be one of the “negros”) and plays. Moreover, it is him which in 1862 (and again in 1881) adapts Notre-Dame de Paris , the Poor wretches and Quatrevingt-treize for the scene.
In 1869, Meurice founds with Vacquerie and the wire of Hugo a newspaper: the Recall .
With died of Victor Hugo in 1885, Meurice and Vacquerie are made executors. For this reason, Meurice will deal with the fitting of the posthumous collections of the poet then will found in 1902 the museum Victor Hugo, in Paris.
He dies in 1905 in Paris.
