Paul Eugene Magloire , born the July 19th 1907 with Cape-Haitian and dead the July 12th 2001 with Port-au-Prince, is a former president of Haiti.

Biography

Wire of general and after a short career of teacher, he enlists in the army in 1930 and reached the rank of commander in 1938.

In 1939, it is graduate school of right of Port-au-Prince.

In 1944, he becomes the chief of the police force of Port-au-Prince, is promoted major and named ordering military forces of the department of the West.

In January 1946, when the population was raised against the president Elie Lescot, it entered in scene, and supported by an small group of officers, ends up convincing the president in difficulty in giving up the capacity with the hands of a junta of three members including itself (two others being the colonel Frank Lavaud and Antoine Lévelt). Within this provisional government, it occupied the function of Minister for the Safety and the National defense of the January 11th to the August 16th 1946.

It occupied the same function when the same triumvirate remade its appearance in 1950, of the May 10th to the December 6th 1950 following the coup d'etat against Dumarsais Estimé.

Whereas the purpose of the military junta in 1950 is only to make elect Magloire become colonel with the elections of the October 8th 1950, he resigned of the junta and declared candidate with the presidency. He largely gained the election vis-a-vis his opponent, the architect of obedience estimist Fénélon Alphonse, becoming thus the first Haitian president elected by the vote for all.

He controlled in a relative stability and of an iron hand. He imprisoned Fignolé thus.

The December 6th 1956, Magloire, esseulé, resigned under the push of popular claims. The country was plunged in a crisis which persisted beyond the provisional governments which followed and of the election of 1957. With its departure of Haiti, it remained some time with the Jamaica before going to the the United States where it will remain until the end of the mode of the Duvalier in 1986. From return in Haiti, it was accepted by the general Henri Namphy and became one of its advisers.
